Sonic Enemy was Peter Hughes' label in the early 1990's. It put out all of the tapes by Exit House, the two early Party of One tapes, two tapes by DiskothiQ, assorted other groups, and some made-to-order copies of radio shows, which I can't confirm have survived at all.

There are pages you can read here about 8 Sonic Enemy releases, but I've cobbled together most of them from donated audio and photos, and a few photos taken of in vivo specimens as it were, during travel. Must give my hugest thanks here to Mark Givens of Wckr Spgt, who provided the bulk of that material.

To see some of the surviving Sonic Enemy catalogs, click the thumbnails below:

Summer 1995 Catalog Was sent to me in a batch of tapes and zines by Robert B., many thanks!
1995 Catalog, Page 1 You can also view this in unreasonably high resolution by clicking here.
1995 Catalog, Page 2 You can also view this in unreasonably high resolution by clicking here.
1994 Catalog, Page 1 Scans sent in by a site reader via email. Thank you!
1994 Catalog, Page 2 Scans sent in by a site reader via email. Thank you!
1993 Catalog Have encountered 3 copies of this catalog, often tucked into a copy of Delicious, Homemade.
1992 Catalog Inside a copy of Pick Yr Monologue.

There are many highlights from the catalogs, chief among them its listing of radio show tapes: Sonic Enemy was also the name of Peter's radio show on KUCI, hosted by Mr. Nobody (Peter) and Dr. Dirt (Peter's friend Greg). If you have literally any surviving audio from this radio show, please, please, please, please, I beg you, get in touch. The episodes are visible in this section of the scan directly below (w/ "Growing Up With You" listing as a map landmark):

In the various catalogs you may see something about Beck. Yes, Sonic Enemy put out Golden Feelings. I will not try to get a copy for the site or cover it because I am absolutely certain some Beck fans out there are on it, and it's not really my area.

There was also a CD reissue, which prompted an MTV correspondent to cluelessly wander into Claremont in 1999 to ask questions. The highlights:

The DiskothiQ/Massengil split 7" is technically also a Sonic Enemy release, as is the DiskothiQ duology The Football Albums

Because Sonic Enemy tapes were produced mostly on-order by Peter in his available time, there aren't many circulating. Tapes I have physical copies of, which you can read about:

DiskothiQ - Delicious, Homemade

DiskothiQ - The Wandering Jew (cassette version; CD/LP by Shrimper)

Compilation - Growing Up With You

Party of One/Delly Daktel Split - Pick Yr Monologue

Exit House - decompositions

Audio/photos of the Hot August Night and Munchie's Kinda Christmas live tapes are only available to me thanks to Mark Givens of Wckr Spgt, and the copies remain safely with him.

Thanks, Mark!

 Compilation - Hot August Night

Compilation - A Munchies Kinda Christmas

Lastly, for the first two Party of One tapes, I've only been able to cobble together information on thanks to messages, mail, and photos/audio rips:

Party of One - A Good Time

Party of One - White Noise

The rest of Sonic Enemy's cassette output, from the rest of the Exit House releases, to the Sonic Enemy radio tapes, to The History of the Ketchup Bear, to the Pie / Sassy / Albatros / Speed Queens tapes, remain elusive.

There are two entire tables on the Materials Needed page dedicated to just Sonic Enemy material I'd like to get ahold of most, which I'll reproduce here:

An additional note about "Transmissions to Horace" and "A Munchie's Kinda Christmas": I am outbid for copies of these at every turn by Mountain Goats completionists, which after a few years has gotten to be very sad. The tapes are rare, but they're rare because Peter hand-dubbed them like every other Sonic Enemy tape. People don't go crazy over copies of 'Delicious, Homemade' and pay $350 on eBay for them (thank god) even though they're rare for the same fundamental reason.

It would be great to secure even one copy of TtH for the Sonic Enemy archives. To my knowledge there's at least one TtH copy circulating online with some extra tracks on it, and very possibly there are others that had more dubbed onto them. I wish I could catalog the different artwork and any additional material on surviving copies, but I would probably have better luck if someone were to organize something like that in a more Mountain Goats specific enthusiast space and rally people to upload scans and audio.

All that said, the mindset of collectors has nothing to do with John D. himself, who has always been a great supporter of my Sonic Enemy preservation efforts. I love the Mountain Goats from Taboo VI to modern-day (as I type this page, it's December 2023 and I've been out to see them play 4 shows this month alone, tyvm) and am glad they're so loved and supported. Especially Matt Douglas :-)
