Party of One - A Good Time [Sonic Enemy, cassette]

Released in 1987. The Sonic Enemy catalog from 1993 describes it as "the first Party of One collection, a little bit longer and more annoying than the other one."

Attempts will be made to transcribe most of the lyrics. Bear in mind, surviving Party of One material uploaded online is even fuzzier than surviving DiskothiQ material. Lyrics are reproduced to the best of my ability with what is available. as you will see very quickly, this... does not always leave much to transcribe.

If you're familiar with the Party of One material from some 90's compilations, where Peter is playing acoustic guitar mostly, this is mostly not that. The handful of tracks with guitar come through very washed-out in the tape hiss. Mostly there are long Casio keyboard riffs and loops, waltzy/disco drum patterns, and a high schooler singing into a haze of tape hiss. It's delightful.

I do not have a copy of this on hand, so I have no way of getting a cleaner rip of it to better understand the lyrics. There's a rip circulating online with a lot of hiss/noise, and some squeaking on the left channel. I'm hoping there's another one around to at least check and see if it can be cleaned up. Based on a circulating rip of compilation Growing Up With You, with Party of One material sourced '86-88, the available rip is also playing faster than it should be, as Peter's voice sounds very squeaky on it, but on Growing Up With You, sounds relatively close to his 90's work.

An interesting note: "Intro & Prologue" is two distinct parts: a waltzy Casio opening for about 5 minutes and 30 seconds, and then about a minute and 45 seconds about Juan Manuel Fangio on a mission to assassinate Augusto Pinochet. This vision, after 23 years, was realized in Peter's masterpiece of self-described commie synth-pop, Fangio in 2010.

A general lyrics note here - every time Peter drops his pitch past a certain point the frequency gets totally eaten by the Casio, and it's hard to make out. So, there's a lot missing here. (That said, don't blame Peter. Again, I believe he recorded these in high school, and was thus during every step in the lifecycle of this recording being made and going to tape.)
On the available rip online, I mostly had to isolate the right channel and hard-reduce the noise, and try to pull things out of that, with a little success. I can sometimes use a rhyming dictionary to take guesses, but you have to keep in mind that a track on this tape rhymes "wheel of an Audi Quattro" with "there's no tomorrow", so there's not always a clear hint to be found. I've done my best and hope the many [inaudible] annotations are forgivable...

04. The Good Side of California

i was sitting in my class when i heard this horrible sound
i soon deduced it was comin from the ground
then the whole fuckin earth started movin around
i said hold on everybody we're armageddon bound

then the first real thought that went through my head
was goddammnit it if we're all gonna end up dead
i sure wish i was in a class with the rest of my friends
so we could all pile together as california ends

then i thought if this is the big one
it's a real bummer cause i forgot my walkman
and fuck all my homework cause i can't get in trouble
if my school's nothin but a big pile of rubble

well pretty soon my bubble had popped
because the earth quit movin and the rumblin stopped
and everything and everyone was just a-ok
so we had to go on with our stupid school day

stupid school day

now lemme tell you somethin!
i can't wait for the next big quake
i wanna feel the whole earth shake
and as the roof caves in and my bones all break
you can bet this ain't no kinda mistake
i'll be smilin 'neath the commotion
as my whole fuckin day slides into the ocean
i dunnno baby but i got a notion
we should be reachin for the suntan lotion

07. Why I Don't Like Telephones

[This one actually has acoustic guitar. Unfortunately it's also nearly inaudible throughout. These are best-guesses.]
