DiskothiQ - The Football Albums (1999) [Sonic Enemy, SE003A/SE003B, CD]
Despite 1997's Sad Truths never making it past its live KUCI performance tape, DiskothiQ went on to do a little more work before the 90's were out. the result is The Football Albums. I'll let Peter's old notes from the Sonic Enemy website lay it out for you.
Thirty-two songs about thirty-two teams. Two CDs --- one each for the NFC and AFC, naturally. Could there have been a worse idea? Could we not have seen it through to completion? The answer to both questions is a resounding NO.
A Brief History of The Football Albums
The Football Albums were born in January, 1998 of a combination of boredom and writer's block. Several months had passed since we'd come up with any new songs, and I expressed concern about this to the Kevins during one of our infrequent practices. Drummer Kevin, who also played a key role in Big Breakfast, explained that he had recently overcome writer's block by deciding to pen ten songs, all called "Tina, I Love You," telling the story of a wayward would-be starlet. While I couldn't really imagine DiskothiQ going in this direction exactly (fortunately, Big Breakfast couldn't either), the notion as exercise had an undeniable appeal to me, and I put myself on alert for ideas that might be suitable for such a project.
Around the same time --- this was January, remember, and Super Bowl hype was in full gear --- there was a piece in the paper about the Packers' then-kicker, which contained the striking bit of information that Scott Norwood, the most infamous Super Bowl kicker of all time, is now an insurance salesman in rural Virginia. While I tried to go to sleep after reading this, a song describing Super Bowl XXV from Norwood's perspective pretty much wrote itself in my head.
It took all of about five seconds to realize that here was the exercise I was looking for, and that it was just ridiculous enough to provide the kick in the ass the band needed at the time. A few fruitless weeks followed, however, and I'd all but dismissed the whole idea when Saints came out of nowhere. And then came the flood: in two weeks we had a full set of songs. Our friends were incredulous. The whole project took on the aspect of a dare, and as my brother learned when he wondered aloud whether our old guitarist Rob was crazy enough to steal the car my next-door neighbor had parked with its keys in the ignition, you don't dare DiskothiQ to do anything.
I used to have these on a single page, but it got a little unwieldy, so I've split it up into two album pages. If you already know what you're looking for, click the thumbnail for the album you want to read about:
