Nothing Painted Blue - Emotional Discipline (1997) [Scat Records, SCAT53, CD]
The compilation! The single thing, to which, more pages on this site at present link to than any other. And so it's going to link out to a bunch of those.
Booklet introduction:
Thanks to everyone who showed these songs their original release: Bill Chen, Dennis Callaci, Robert Griffin, David Rothblatt, Jeremy Steckler, Jenny Toomey & Kristin Thompson, Bela Koekrompacher, Chuck & Kris Arnold. CD mastered (as were many of the singles) by John Golden.
Special thanks to our 3 biggest fans/harshest critics: Robert Vodicka, Rael Lewis, Bob Durkee.
Instead of a regular tracklist, I'll go through the releases compiled here and link to their index pages on the site if they're available; each of those pages will have their Emotional Discipline liner notes typed up alongside the track. For the ones I don't have a page for, I'll put in their notes in order.
1. Go to Waste
"Go to Waste" originally appeared on compilation If I Could Hear You, I Would Hit You (Baby Huey, 1991)
2. Up With Upland
This song appeared on Nothing Painted Blue cassette Logorrhea, which I don't have a copy of, and could use some help finding. The liner notes:
KYLE: ...the crown jewel of the Inland
Empire, home to the Shrimper/Jupa
P.O. boxes, James Games arcade,
and our parents. Recorded live at
KSPC on our first ever radio
appearance, after about a year and
a half of playing around the
Claremont College campuses.FRANKLIN: An early intrusion of Tin Pan
Alley into our early, Buzzcocksy
style. The line I flub is "We'll hang
around the video store and the
frozen yogurt shop." Well-liked at
our marathon frat-party gigs,
presumably for its novelty value.
3. K For Karnival
4. Let's Kiss
5. Foundation Slips
These three tracks made up The Bellyspeak EP (Jupa, 1991)
Note: Emotional Discipline's liner notes label this JUPA 001, but see the scans for JUPA 002 on the record itself; also, JUPA 001 is printed on the label for A Baby, A Blanket, A Packet Of Seeds. This is the numbering scheme used on the site.
6. Few
7. Or Do They?
These two tracks made up the Few 7" single (Scat Records, 1992)
8. Swivelchair
9. Blooming, Buzzing
10. El Niño
These three tracks were present on the CD version of Swivelchair (Kokopop, 1992). "El Niño" was not included on the Swivelchair 7" single, only the other two songs were.
11. Big Pink Heart
This song was featured on compilation 7" Swing Set (Shrimper, 1992)
12. Missed the Point
This one appeared on compilation A Day In The Park (The Now Sound, 1993)
13. Undeserving
This was previously unissued, and only appears on this compilation. As Kyle notes, a different recording was used for Power Trips Down Lovers Lane. Kyle's is the only liner note for this song:
KYLE: We liked this song so much
that we re-recorded it for Power
Trips. This version is better,
which is too bad.
14. Sorely Tempted
15. Lab Rat Blues
16. Going to Fontana
These three songs made up the Sorely Tempted 7" (Jupa, 1993) which was a Jupa release (JUPA 008) contrary to the booklet's printing of KOKO1 (they appear to have printed Swivelchair's description twice, if you glance at both)
17. Another Child Bride
This one was on the Nothing Painted Blue/Lois split 7" (Simple Machines, 1993)
18. After The Housewarming
19. Love to the Third Power
These two made up the After The Housewarming 7" (Anyway Records, 1994)
20. Anti-Nomination
This cover of Refrigerator's "Anti-Nomination" appeared on the Nothing Painted Blue/Refrigerator Split 7" (Misha Records, 1995) alongside a long interview with the band, which you can currently read scans and a transcript of.
