DiskothiQ - Lane Discipline (1996) [X-Mas Records, XMAS-009, 7"]

This 7" came in a yellow paper sleeve with a construction-paper Q outline that folds out over it, so far spotted in red or in teal. Scans are at the bottom of this page.

complete liner notes from sleeve:

LANE DISCIPLINE is the system, today largely forgotten, by which our multi-lane highways were intended to be used. Based more upon common sense than anything else, this system dictates that drivers use certain lanes depending on their cars' speed and the traffic conditions on a given road. If every driver observed tehse simple rules, the process of getting from place to place on American highways would be an infinitely safer, easier, and more efficient one.

1 STAY RIGHT On a two-lane highway, the only time you should ever be in the left lane is if you are overtaking a slower car.

2 PASS LEFT When you encounter a slower car, move one lane left to pass, then return immediately to the right lane.

3 WATCH YOUR MIRRORS If you are occupying the left lane because you need to pass a number of cars, be aware of any faster cars behind you. If one approaches, move right to let it pass.

4 NEVER PASS ON THE RIGHT ...even if there are more than two lanes. On a multi-lane highway, the right lane is for slow moving traffic and people getting on and off the highway. Each lane to the left should be successively faster.

5 PICK THE LANE THAT CORRESPONDS TO YOUR SPEED If traffic in your lane is slower than you want to go, move left. If cars are passing you on the right, then you are going too slow for the lane you're in: move right. Stay as far right as possible to maintain your desired speed.

LANE DISCIPLINE was recorded at FBE Studios in San Dimas by Bob Durkee in 1994 and 1995. Everything by DiskothiQ except that Heartland Feeling was written by Beck and Javelin by Simon Joyner. Many thanks to them, Bob, and Brent Rademaker. DiskothiQ & Beck can be reached by mail c/o Sonic Enemy, PO Box 9, La Verne CA 91750; for information about Simon Joyner releases, write to Sing, Eunuchs!, PO Box 31283, Omaha NE 68131. This is Xmas 009. "It took a remarkable man to maintain his equilibrium. One night in Buenos Aires when we entered a restaurant, the entire assemblage stood. This was 30 years after he retired." - Leo Levine, on Juan Manuel Fangio.

The early mention of Juan Manuel Fangio here is great, considering what was to come. This one came out on X-Mas, which was run by Brent Rademaker of Further. Two covers on here that are full-band: one of a Simon Joyner song, one of a Beck song. The other two songs are a solo acoustic track and an instrumental reprise.

The acoustic solo track, "Lane Discipline", is one of those songs that could lead off a DiskothiQ "best-of" compilation. I'm on the record saying that Peter should do the acoustic guitar thing more often. The lyrics on this one are sweet; "and when the night is long and cold / remember that you're not alone" is the only instance of DiskothiQ lyrics I've seen someone get a tattoo of. Peter's singing is also very nice here, closer to what his later solo work would sound like.

Lane Discipline (Lane Discipline 7")

as i come in from the porch
as my day draws to its end
as i close the kitchen door

as i climb into my bed
it occurs to me that you're
somewhere far away instead

maybe sleeping on some floor
with your clothes under your head
and i'm remembering once more
words that you yourself once said

wherever you may sleep tonight
be sure and keep your heart nearby
be sure and keep it by your side

and when the night is long and cold
remember that you're not alone
remember you've still got a home
