Notes on the above split of the drumming: Joel Connell plays drums on "Colton", "Speedway", "Wish And Need", "Glitter Jazz", "How You Continue Dreaming", "Suckdown", and "Hydrogen Suitcase:. Chris Jones plays drums on Bicycle", "Son House", "Party Hat", "Green And White Meet Blue", "Sorry State Line", "Washout", and "98 Pounds". There's an old article Franklin Bruno wrote that quotes Dennis on the amicable personnel change:
Dennis: "There was no plan for Joel to leave, he kind of got busy and lost interest at the same time. Also, we'd known Chris for so long." Chris adds, "I'd been away from the Empire at college for a few years, but I met everyone again at Dennis' bachelor party. After the wedding, I sat in on drums at a Satnam Puppets show, and Dennis asked me to fill in for Joel a few times after that."
This album is great as a full listen, and has some exceptional single tracks. "Wish And Need" is an all-time top 10 Refrigerator track for me. "Bicycle" is of course one of their strongest. "Colton" and "Old City Cool" are incredible bookends. Also of note is "Green and White Meet Blue", the longest* song on the album at 3 minutes 44 seconds, and one of the songs that really benefits from being recorded by Bob Durkee and given space. (I say this as a guy who loves the low-tech stuff and calls Lonesome Surprize a perfect album.) "Suckdown", which follows it, is also great stuff just for how hard it goes.
(*"Party Hat"'s track on the CD is 4 minutes and 2 seconds, but the actual "Party Hat" segment similar to its acoustic appearance on Bicycle is only the last 90 seconds or so. The first two and a half minutes are a long electric guitar instrumental, which sounds like a new recording of a song from the A-side of 1990 Paste cassette Drugstore.)
Lyric write-up for this album is a work in progress (yes, still).
