What Does This 7" Sound Like?
|
SIDE ONE
A1. Crows
A2. Ceiling
A3. (Jr. High)
A4. Black + White Phonograph
SIDE TWO
B1. Down By The Law
B2. Down....
B3. Untitled
This is a nice one. As you can see from the cover, it lines up so that it looks like it says DOWN WITH REFRIGERATOR.
On the A-Side: "Crows" is a short acoustic one, melancholy. "Ceiling" might be the best song on the 7", that chorus will stick with you. "(Jr. High)" is that little interstitial bit of piano, as far as I can tell. "Black + White Phonograph" has some more kick to it. They still had Joel Connell onboard here, and he's doing some nice work on the drums at the tail end of the A-side especially.
Flip to side B, and Joel's on guitar for "Down By The Law" too, while Dennis mans the banjo. After two minutes of that, you get "Down..." which is the earworm of the bunch, for two more minutes. Then an unlisted, untitled third track, more thoughtful.

Lyrics by ear (old Refrigerator means these are just best guesses, always open to corrections:)
A1. Crows
beaks bust on the glass
crows circle 'round your house
your calls go un-answered
i'm told
you find your friends dropping away like flies
they don't drop on in you
so much as out of view
A2. Ceiling
and i got the news
no i heard you'd finally turned and gone away
that's what the sidewalks say
better never
better never than now
better never than now
not a stormcloud in the sky
and there's nothing going on inside
said you had to leave
i just didn't believe you
better never
better never than now
better never than now
and i guess you're right
just a waste of time
to have four walls
and have no ceiling
that's what the sidewalks say
better never than now
better never than now
A3. (Jr. High)
A4. Black + White Phonograph
this rosary
feels dirty
passing through my hands
it used to be
so pretty
passing through my hands
bury it in the hills
bury it in your eyes
she's carrying
memories
that scream inside her head
like a black and white phonograph
this rosary
feels dirty
passing through my hands
B1. Down By The Law
down by the law
where the river is bred to run
sickens the signals
playing with ampoules of fent
children by hangnails
wherein the lonely pray
down by the law
taught this way
if this your best
i've definitely seen your worst
huddled in the shower stalls
down by the wall
blood is bred to run
from the wrists
B2. Down...
you've been down
for too long
you've been wearing your umbrella
in the sun
you count yourself out
before you've even begun
you've been down
for too long
you've been watching these dumb talk shows
for some self-help
you've been down for too long
B3. Untitled
fed this bird
who looked starving
a piece of my stale bread
and this is what he sang
and this is what he sang
a little black
a little black
colors everything
saw this bird
who was crying
over a broken wing
and this is is what he sang
and this is what he sang
a little black
a little black
colors everything
